Who is Fred Bender, what has he achieved during his 40 year career at PTT/KPN?

My career started as a government official at ptt's telephone service in Amsterdam in 1969. After my technical training, I have been in charge of the management of various international transmission networks that have branched out all over the world for 35 years.

The old analogue techniques were said goodbye over time. The new digital techniques successfully took over the old analogue products.

Long-distance traffic went entirely from the labour-intensive analogue copper network to the digital fibre optics technology.

Until mid-2006 I was in the technical field in office. But in this technical field there was nothing left for me to do now.

The last 3 years prior to my retirement in 2009 I worked in a financial-administrative department at kpn headquarters in The Hague.

There I have been in charge of the handling of contract terminations of the wholesale business customers. (such as multinationals and universities). According to a legal requirement at the time, all contract agreements and underlying documentation had to be in printed form in the vault. (This strict prescription was subsequently repealed.)

From new and modification orders I digitized every piece of paper and stored it on the company server for consultation. For the maintenance service outside the usual business hours as very useful to be able to have this contract information.

1 year after my retirement I was informed of company roads that thanks to the preliminary work of 3 years carried out by me and the adjustment of the administrative system a file can now be carried out completely digitally.

Volunteer activities after my 40 year career at KPN.

From the administrative experience gained during my last process before my retirement at KPN, it has proved to be of great value to me as a function of my successor task as archivist of the scientific archive of the Academic Medical Centre Amsterdam, whom I volunteered between 2011 and 2018.

Other volunteer duties:

Ecclesiastical activities since 2003

Since 2003 I have been affiliated with the Protestant municipality of Amsterdam-Southeast as a pastoral assistant of the protestant church.

I carry out the task of reporting the pastoral consultation meetings.

-As such, I also conduct correspondence with other internal groups and the church council.

-According to a schedule, I also control the image control of church television broadcasts via the Internet. (www.kerkomroep.nl) I am also the technical administrator for the Church for church television.

Language coaching Dutch in the words and writings of many people born outside Europe:

Together with my girlfriend Jeanine, many people born outside Europe have come to our path since the year 2000.

In order to function well in Dutch society, depending on the function, a certain level of mastery of the Dutch language in words and writings is required.

(For persons who cannot meet this requirement, there is no hope on the Dutch labour market).

In order to achieve this goal, we give at home to the "client", often weekly on an evening of language training with the aim that professional exams can be successfully taken at Secondary Primary Education, Higher Primary Education or university level. Most of these have been long-term friendships.

Jeanine and I have both now built our own "client portfolio".

We have a special contact with a naturalized couple born in Afghanistan. They were once allowed into the Netherlands with a war refugee status and now, thanks to our long-standing efforts, master the Dutch language at NT2 level.

As of 2015, the couple has 4 very inquisitive children aged 5, 7, 9 and 11, all of whom, like their uncle Fred and aunt Jeanine and their two parents, want to learn to master Dutch well.

Between January 2012 and September 2014 I visited the family 4 times a week. Because of taking an evening course (in 2015) I currently visit the family twice a week. Structural reading is currently the main goal for 'our' children.

Listening is a way for the children to build a broad vocabulary in the Dutch language.

Because of the intensive and controlled guidance I give them, the children make good progress.

Depending on their age, they are able to formulate good sentences in Dutch.

The oldest 3 children now read the Dutch text independently on their own level. (primary school, grades 4, 6 and 7)

Through intensive guidance from the father, the oldest child is also able to read and understand the English language.

This explains in Dutch what is in the English book

(e.g. walt disney) is written.

The father of the children has an academic level of thinking, medical study at the universities of Kabul and Amsterdam UMC . (last unfortunately not completed)

ICT related matters:

Since +/- 1985 by self-study skilled in the application of various database programming languages t.b.v automation of the department administration.

Since +/- 2000, my creations at KPN were finally taken over by commercial software (SAP).

Afterwards I have gained myself in the installation, application and maintenance of various versions windows and Linux operating systems, and basic internet knowledge.

Photography (private, hobby)

Since +/- 1975 with analogue camera many projects done in Amsterdam, such as the complete construction of the metro-east line, completed in 1981. (Project has not yet been made digitally available)

Since 2010 active in Amsterdam-Holendrecht as a neighbourhood photographer where much in the district is subject to change.

Between 2011 and 2018 I fulfilled a task as archivist in the department of rehabilitation medicine of the academic medical center.

The main task was to commute patient records between the outpatient clinic and the basement archive located under the hospital on the other side of the street.

-Carrying out annual archive cleanses of the files until mid-2016.

2016: Due to the commissioning of the Electronic Patient File, the paper patient files from the archive are no longer physically delivered to the executive department of the academic hospital.

2016: start of the completion digitisation of the remaining paper patient files.

On the call of a department, a paper file is now digitised by the Central Medical Archives (CMA) and placed in the medical viewer.

In mid-2016 I received a functional relocation as archivist of Rehabilitation Medicine to the Central Medical Archive. (CMA).

Between mid to late 2016, the release of space by scanned patients files will be available at the Central Medical Archives.

The contents of the basement archive (under the hospital) have now been moved to the building of Central Medical Archives on the other side of the street.

As of 2017, I have accepted the task of archivist to re-index the entire scientific archive of the VUmc (800-metre archive shelf) from the ground up because of the relocation of the basement archive to the Central Medical Archive room.

After 16 months, 4 days a week, this task was completed

My task there is to determine and describe the archive material brought in by private individuals in the collection.

ImagineIC is sharing the office space with the Bijlmermeer Public Library.

Radio Southeast :

In the Amsterdam region, the regional radio broadcasting is dedicated to the organization Salto. Salto has various frequencies in use, both on cable channels, in the ether and the Internet.

One of the stations at Salto is the radio broadcaster Southeast.

During the day and in the evenings, a large number of volunteers staff the studio to realize the radio programmes for the Amsterdam region.

There is also a night program.

In the absence of a technician /DJ in the studio, the program comes from a digital archive.

Fred Bender is one of the many volunteers who take turns to provide the sound technique of the broadcasts.

Fred Bender is often active as a technician in the Anitri-fm program.
